Hammock Upset

A former mentor of mine taught me that most upsets and frustrations in life stem from thwarted expectations and incomplete communication. I am posting below an unedited email communication concerning a woman disappointed in her hammock.  My purpose in doing so is not so much to highlight her somewhat passive aggressive style, but to alert you, gentle reader, to the fact that a hammock is not a forever thing.

Hello, I purchased my hammock (a Mayan hammock) 3 years ago, taking good care of it, not out in the rain, inside when not being used. Suddenly, 2 weeks ago, when someone was sitting on it, about 10 of the threads at the end (between the main part of the hammock and the end to the knot) just snapped. Do you have any suggestions for repair? The hammock is not abused in any way, just regular use. I am very surprised, really did not expect this to happen. Thank you for any assistance.

Hello J Song,

The California sun and UV rays can certainly contribute to the deterioration of the nylon strings in your hammocks as it can with anything hung out in the elements over the years.  There is no practical way to repair the hammock.  Shipping hammocks for repair to Mexico and back is cost prohibitive.  For safety's sake, please refrain from using the hammocks since the strings of the arms are coming apart.   It is time to consider replacing your hammocks with new ones.  How can we help you?

We take very good care of the hammocks, and although they are outside sometimes, I really expected to get more than three years out of them (no kids, used appropriately).  I am rather disappointed and am not interested in purchasing anything further at this time.

So much sadness, so little time.  Life is fleeting.  Love doesn't last.  Grab a hammock and have a blast! For a discussion of realistic expectations for your Mayan hammock and proper care and handling visit: Hammock Care and Handling.
